“VeriStor took the time to understand everything about our environment and made very knowledgeable recommendations based specifically on our needs.” – JERRY HOOK, UNIVERSITY OF TN MEDICAL CENTER

University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) is the only academic hospital in the Knoxville area, making it the leading resource for research, discovery, and updated treatments in the community. Its 600-bed hospital serves as a referral center for Eastern Tennessee, Southeast Kentucky, and Western North Carolina and was the region’s first Primary Certified Stroke Center and is the area’s only Level I Trauma Center. UTMC has opened the region’s first dedicated Heart Lung Vascular Institute and operates 70 remote patient care sites throughout the region. Every UTMC patient care facility operates with the common mission to serve through healing, education, and discovery.

For UTMC, managing the dramatic growth of hospital data in its virtual environment is a paramount business objective. With nearly 100 TB of raw storage required to maintain its clinical information systems, UTMC needed a storage infrastructure that was not only reliable, but also flexible enough to scale with increasing hospital storage demands. The medical center had migrated its data from a physical server environment to a VMware Virtualized Server infrastructure just over three years ago. It now needed a primary storage architecture that would seamlessly support its virtual storage processes without high costs or complexity. UTMC’s technical environment includes:

  • VMware virtual servers
  • Over 100 TB of raw storage
  • Complex combination of medical billing and clinical information system applications
  • HP 3PAR Utility Storage
  • Veeam Backup and Replication
“We wanted to optimize our storage environment with a solution we knew would work well with our VMware virtual environment,” said Jerry Hook at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. “It was important for us to have a solution that was easy to manage, scalable, and cost efficient.”

To support the primary storage needs of its new VMware infrastructure, UTMC turned to the virtualization and storage architects at VeriStor. After working with VeriStor to develop its VMware virtual environment, UTMC knew that it could trust VeriStor to understand its environment and the solutions that would best support their high-volume storage requirements.

“The virtualization and storage experts at VeriStor took the time to understand everything about our environment and made very knowledgeable recommendations based specifically on our needs,” said Hook. “Because they have access to a number of options, they were able to help us make the right storage choices to suit our infrastructure and business operations.”

Ultimately, VeriStor architected an environment for UTMC that consolidated its primary VMware storage needs and delivered comprehensive data protection and backup for assured data protection and availability.

With the VeriStor-designed virtual storage architecture now in place, UTMC now has the reliable and efficient virtual and storage infrastructure it needs to support its high-volume clinical information system. The VeriStor-architected solution provides the high availability UTMC required while also supporting the organization’s backup and data protection requirements for complete information assurance. Now, the storage infrastructure is optimized for its VMware servers and delivers the long-term scalability and reliability the medical center needs to support its critical data.

“VeriStor delivered the complete storage solution we needed for our virtualized infrastructure – all without any surprises,” said Hook. “Our storage architecture is reliable and easy to manage. Plus, it integrated seamlessly with our virtual infrastructure while delivering the scalability we needed for future growth opportunities. VeriStor takes the time to understand your specific requirements so that the solution they recommend is exactly what you need. We couldn’t be happier.”

With its virtual server and storage infrastructure now in place for critical clinical applications, UTMC is now looking to deploy a Citrix-based Virtual Desktop Infrastructure for its 70 remote patient care sites.

“We look forward to working with VeriStor again during the next phase of our virtual infrastructure deployment,” added Hook. “We trust their knowledge in virtualization and storage and value their expertise.”
